Sugar and Spice Apples

As autumn arrives, CookingShorts spends a lot of time visiting our local U-Pick farms. Once we get our pounds (and pounds) of apples home, we love to sit down and re-invent new ways to use them. Even though we have tons of apple recipes, this is one of our favorite ways to enjoy them. We simply toss them into a sauté pan with a little butter and dress them up with a little cinnamon and sugar. You can serve this as a side dish or play it up with Vanilla Bean ice cream for a delightful dessert.

Ingredients:Sugar and Spice Apples Cooking In Pan

  • 4 small apples cored and cubed – any type
  • 2 cups of apple juice
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar – light or dark (The darker the sugar the higher molasses content)
  • 2 tablespoons of pumpkin pie spice ( if that is not available you could just use cinnamon)
  • Pinch of nutmeg

Sugar and Spice ApplesDirections:

Add olive oil to a large skillet and place over medium heat. Add cubed apples and sauté for about 5 minutes to allow the sugars in the apples to caramelize. Turn the heat down to medium low and add the brown sugar and pumpkin pie spice to the apples. Deglaze the pan by adding in two cups of apple juice. Zest in a pinch of fresh nutmeg. Allow apple juice to cook down and for about 10-15 mins.
