DIY Scrabble Coasters

Print Friendly Version Print Friendly Version

This simple project has become a favorite among all of our friends. We made them once for our sister-in-law and posted a picture of them on Facebook. About 50 of our friends chimed in, wanting these coaster for themselves. Since then, every birthday gift that we have given has included custom Scrabble coasters. Thankfully, this has been a great way to give a really thoughtful gift to those that we love. And honestly, it’s super easy; the project takes only about an hour. The hardest part is coming up with a custom theme for each square. This idea is perfect for the upcoming holidays. Your friends will be overwhelmed at the thoughtfulness you put behind their gift. You can also use the remaining scrabble pieces to make cute stationary!

Materials:DIY Scrabble Coasters

  • Scrabble tiles – you can find these at resale shops, yard sales and eBay. I found mind on eBay with a maroon stain.
  • cork board
  • carpenter’s glue
  • sharp craft knife
  • small paint brush
  • mod podge

Directions:

Pick out four 4-letter words for each coaster. I did my coasters in themes: personality, beer, wine, music, food and hobby. Spell out the words with your tiles on cork board and trace around them with a pencil. Remove tiles and apply paint carpenter’s glue to cork board inside the traced square. Add Scrabble tiles to the cork board, beginning in the corner. Pay attention to the letters, making sure they are turned the correct way. I like to leave one letter out per coaster. Coat each square with mod podge, allow it to dry completely. Paint a second coat, ensuring all the nooks, crannies and corners are coated. Allow to dry over night. Using a sharp knife, cut out the squares, trying to get as close to the edge as possible. Stack and use twine to package up the coasters.
