Ever Heard of a Garden Peach Tomato?

Every Sunday from May to November, my husband and I make our way to the local farmers market to buy a majority of our fresh produce.  This tradition is not only a fun activity for us, it’s also a great way of finding the best tasting fruits and vegetables.  Here’s a link to search your state for a farmers market near you.

Garden Peach TomatoesRecently, I came across a fruit that was new to me, a Garden Peach Tomato.  These adorable little guys are a native South America, mainly found in Peru.  Known also as Coconas, they look so unlike any other tomato.  Most are around the size of a golf ball, slightly heart-shaped similar to a small peach, and some have a bit of ‘peach’ fuzz on the skin.  The skin is very thin so the tomatoes appear slightly translucent and luminous.  This low acid fruit has a sweet, delicate flavor that makes it so easy to pop them in your mouth for a quick snack.

If you ever see these cute little guys in your grocery store or farmers market, give them a try.  So how to use a garden peach tomato?  You could quarter them and toss them in your favorite cold pasta dish, slice and serve them on a mixed green salad, or dice with mozzarella and basil, then serve on crostinis.

    I am growing these sweet little gems on the recommendation of a local garden center. If they make it in the house before I eat them this is a recipe I made-up today.

    green beans (cooked 3 mins in pasta water, 2 oz whole wheat penne pasta, 4-5 peach tomatoes, 2-3 small red tomatoes, and a few grape tomatoes, all cut in large pieces. Basil slivers, 2 oz chopped Mozzarella cheese, 2 tsp. lemon olive oil, 3 oz. leftover grilled chicken cut in thin strips, toss altogether and top with grated Parmesan cheese. Made 2 servings.

    I had never heard of Garden Peach Tomatoes before reading your post. If I ever see them at my store I will certainly give them a try. They sound wonderful, and a lot of fun to cook with.
