I give 120% to everything I do. When we have a cook out, party or BBQ, I really like to go the extra mile to make my guests feel comfortable and special. I like to make sure all levels of my home are clean and clutter free. I put a tablecloth down over the table and have paper plates, napkins and silverware to match. I also like to make sure that everything I present not only tastes good, but is pleasing to the eye.
At a recent cook out, I felt that I was being criticized for my efforts. To me, they implied that I did too much for just a simple BBQ. After I got thinking about it, I realized that it wasn’t criticism. I just don’t think people generally understand how easy it is to make simple things inviting and elegant.
It can be inexpensive to make your table look like a million bucks. Almost every city has a dollar store and Targets and craft stores have dollar sections. You can spice up your table with matching paper products, fun candles, food flags, large bowls, etc.
It is also easy to make the presentation of your dish look like it came from a 5 star restaurant by adding fresh herbs, flowers or fruit to the plate. Below is an example of how I dressed up simple sliced cantaloupe.
- 1 cantaloupe, halved and sliced
- 1 cup of fresh raspberries, rinsed
- 1 bunch of fresh mint, sections removed
Place your sliced cantaloupe in different directions on the plate. Place raspberries on the plate, where there is no cantaloupe. Finish by tucking the stems of your fresh mint under the fruit, allowing the leaves to stick out.
So, fellow CookingShorts followers, don’t be afraid to impress your guests and go over the top. It makes them feel special and you look like a hero.
